Long gone, a crazed, depraved wizard found that mortal emotions hold great volumes of spirit energy which could sustain and fuel his body and powers for years beyond his lifespan, causing him to develop a means of harvesting those emotions in a simple and efficient way. He would come out with the Mimic, a parasitic life form enhanced by his own magic that would burrow into several interactable objects, most commonly chests or other containers, and use it as a shell till the time was right to strike, ambushing both common folk with their supply crates and adventurous wanderers with the promise of treasure. Though the mimic does not kill and very rarely deal severe blows, the experience with one can draw out a great deal or emotions including fear, anger, and in some cases bliss and adrenaline, all of which exhibit spirit energies which the mimic then stores inside its core within the container till it is ready to return to its master and allow him to harvest it.
The story of the wizard who created the Mimics have been passed down from generation to generation with it growing more and more faded with each telling. Nowadays, the existence of this wizard is thought to be nothing but a legend yet his notorious Mimics continue to plague unsuspecting wanders to this day.
Abilities
The prime purpose of a Mimic is to ambush and restrain a person who comes close to it, its makeshift mouth opening at the touch of its prey and its meaty, lengthy tongue lashing out to grab them, dragging them inside the container to draw out their emotions through a series of molestations and hostile or fear-inducing actions. The tongue does not only serve a physical use, it is also a type of leech that devours the emotions of whomever is held captive inside of its shell until it has been drained of any more emotion to give.
Mimics are able to move even if they are infused with a container, using their strong prehensile tongue to drag itself across the ground. However they only resort to this if a lengthy amount of time has passed since their infusion and someone being prayed upon by them. When without a container, mimics are fast and small, the size of mice that only begin to grow when inside their shell.
When a mimic first takes host inside of a vacant container, its parasitic body infuses with it and strengthens the material it is made out of, causing the container to be tougher but also weigh heavier than normal. As such, mimics are often spotted in workshops and storehouses that weigh the containers they keep and handle them using cranes or other mechanical arms with which the Mimic does not lash out.
It has been observed that a mimic cannot detach from its container once it has fully attached itself to it, living the rest of its existence in it unless destroyed. It is uncertain how and when new Mimics are created - some scholars theorize that all mimics are connected in a singular hivemind in which they communicate when new spawnlings have to be created to sustain their numbers without sacrificing subtlety and surprise, which they rely on heavily.
Physical Appearance
Without a shell, Mimics are mouse-sized, worm-like parasites with a fleshy purple skin and a singular orange eye. They are relatively harmless in this state but also difficult to spot and catch thanks to their size and speed.
When a Mimic infuses itself into a container, it begins to rapidly grow to fill the inner walls of the object with its purple skin, developing additional eyes that conceal themselves in cracks and holes of the container as well as growing it's tail into a massive tongue-like appendage that is able to stretch five times it's size. Additional, smaller tendrils are present inside the shell which are used to tangle and torment their prey.
On the outside, a Mimic is indifferent in appearance to any other chest, barrel or box it mimics.
