Background
Practising ancient rites and beliefs, the Gryphorian church, also known as the Voices of Gryph, is a dominant religion appearing in western Luxfordia that originates from Neverwind. It is the second largest religion found in the kingdom, beaten only by the Church of Divinity.
The true beginnings of the Gryphorians dates back to a time when a now-extinct race worshiped a being known as Gryph in the Heights of Maradin. The ruins of their civilisation are scattered on the peninsula to this day. Only when the first kingdom of Luxfordia would fall into decline and Humanity led a mass exodus across the seas did those of Clan Neverwind, a clan of nomadic seers and scribes, come to Maradin and find these ancient ruins wrought with knowledge and wealth. Curious of the ancient wisdoms upon the pillars of the lands of Maradin, Clan Neverwind settled on the far western cliffs and began to study the teachings of those they'd dub "Gryphorians", a people who worshiped Gryph and the free skies until one day they all vanished, said to have been taken by the winds to a place of eternal beauty.
The Neverwind Clan would begin to dedicate themselves to the ancient rites of the Gryphorians so that they too could one day find eternal beauty in Gryph's embrace. Quickly a culture would take root in the eastern reaches of Azura dedicated to the worship of the winds, of Gryph, by the very air they would breathe and thank. They began to experiment with the lessons of the past, erecting mighty windmills to vitalise their production and in song did their people find happiness.
Under the reign of the Rogue King Yor Qorrus, a war between the fast growing kingdom of Luxfordia and the nation of Neverwind would boil into a massacre on the foot of the Skystriker Mountains. The overwhelming numbers of Yor's army would ultimately best the advances of Neverwind's technology so in the year 263 Neverwind would come under the control of Luxfordia once more.
In 767 The Voices of Gryph would be silenced and forced to become an underground occult operating in the shadows as Divinism was enforced without cease by the command of Archbishop Samson Solidus. Any who would be found praying to the winds of fortune would be tortured or killed and attempts at destroying the holy scriptures of the Gryphorians were made albeit not successfully.
The Voices of Gryph would remain a secretive society in Maradin and its neighbouring regions till Queen Regindra Fedelerin took to the throne. Religious freedom was a prime notion of the Asvarian Queen and with it, the occult could come out of hiding and establish itself once more in Neverwind. However the roots of Divinism run deep in the people of the kingdom so there would be many who'd voice against the rise of the Gryphorians.
